The masthead is very bold in block capitals coloured white and highlighted in a bold red colour. The whole of the front cover has a simple colour scheme of black and white, the red is the only colour that does and is used to make the text stand out.
The main image of this cover is very ‘cool’. The main cover line says, “Is Jay-Z bigger than hip-hop?”, the main image of Jay-Z implies this as it is him towering over the sky-scrapers of New York. The main image is slightly to the left of the page ensuring that no cover lines cover the image of Jay-Z’s body.
This front cover is very simple but I like it as the graphics look neat and tidy. I feel that because its doesn't have lots have loads of cover lines all over the page distracting you from the main image. I think the effortless clean graphics will make it stand out on the newsstand compared to others.
On the left hand of the page there is a plus sign with hip-hop artists names listed underneath. This makes the reader of the magazine feel like they are getting extra.
This magazines skyline is small saying, “hip-hop on a higher level”, in the theme of the title, “XXL”, its powerful.
The skyline says, “SPECIAL ISSUE”, making the reader believe they have to get this edition of this magazine because it’s SPECIAL. Its in capital letters in white (keeping in with the colour scheme) with a shadow behind it. All the text on this front cover had a shadow behind it making it seem as though it is jumping of the page at you with a 3D affect.
The masthead is of a bold red colour, outlined by white (this bold red colour is common in a lot of music magazines). The masthead has the thickest shadow behind it meaning it is most important.
The subheadings of the cover lines are big and white in the font of ‘times new roman’ making the front cover look smart and chic. The text underneath the subheadings are more of a less formal font. The cover lines are only on the right, ensuring the main image is not covered too much. There is also a buzz word “PLUS”, highlighted is red and outlined in white making it stand out more making sure the readers can see they are getting extra.
The main images is strong, a close up of Adele, her face slightly to the left keeping away from cover lines.
The masthead of NME magazine is usually red, but the colour scheme and graphics have changed on this edition of the magazine brand NME. I like the change though. The colour scheme of this edition uses bright colours, yellow and turquoise which will certainly make this magazine stand out on the newsstand against others.
I never thought the NME magazine would ever do an edition on Lady Gaga because I didn’t think she was their kind of genre of music and certainly not the genre that would appeal to their target audience. But as they are a mass market magazine they have many customers with different needs to be met and some of those customers may like Lady Gaga, but to avoid upsetting their loyal customers they have put all the usual band names they write about all over the front page e.g. Top right hand corner, under the masthead
The skyline stands out it's a really cool font but in a plain colour so it doesn't over power the masthead. In between the skyline and the masthead it says, "the music, the money, the market share", which suggests to me it's aimed to a young adult, someone more mature with a career.
The masthead is simple but bold standing out in the bold colour of black aslo the bright colours blue and yellow making the masthead head stand out even more.
There are lot's of cover lines on this magazine but the main image of Lady Gaga is in front of all the text making her the main centre of attention, making her 3D almost as if she is jumping off of the page. In the cover lines there is the odd black coloured text which really draws attention to your eyes. All of the other text are colours that are fade, made to seem less important to the rest of the bold black cover lines.
There are lots of pattern on the front cover matching the colour of Lady Gaga's hair creating a colour scheme and also making all the colours come together complementing each other.
There is also a giant plus sign making the readers believe they are getting important extras if they buy this magazine.
The masthead of Q magazine is never really a masthead its and 'mastcorner' leaving maximum space to fill with cover lines and the main image. The masthead never changes is colour of white and red or size no matter what the colour scheme is. Underneath the masthead are the words, "a different take on music", making itself look individual and unique which today everyone wants and wants to be.
This magazine cover has kept all their cover lines out of the way of the main image. They have used many buzz words and clever techniques to make the magazine more appealing with their "EXCLUSIVE" and their "+" sign and the circle on the right of the magazine, making the text inside look important. For the cover lines on the bottom they have made them stand out more by highlighting them in black and using blue and red lines to separate the different cover lines.
The main cover line is about Lily Allen being "sexy beast", keeping within this theme the main image is of Lily Allen posing in between two black Panther’s which are beautiful animals suggesting that Lily Allen is beautiful too, which she is.
The colours in this front cover are red, blue, white and black - all really bold, eye catching colours if used correctly.
